To all of you with a green thumb, or even to those that just enjoy being plant parents – it’s your time! It has been a long few winter months, but Spring is coming up full steam ahead. Just the name of the season brings the feeling of better days ahead! Flowers blooming, birds chirping, warmer weather – what’s not to love? Now that the weather can finally sustain some natural beauty for us to enjoy, it’s time to take advantage of all of the treasures the spring season brings us.

If you’ve never had your own garden or grown any plants, you might have many questions on how to get started on raising them. Getting started might seem like an overwhelming process, but it’s much easier than you think – and the satisfaction that you get after growing a healthy, beautiful plant from the roots up is so rewarding. There are so many benefits to starting your own home garden (inside your home or out) that doing so will bring you a genuine feeling of happiness and accomplishment. So, let’s discuss!

Learn Something New

This one applies to all of you that have not yet discovered their green thumbs, but don’t worry; As long as your research is thorough and you take care to avoid the common mistakes that come with growing plants at home – like overwatering or overcrowding – you will have come out the other end of the process having learned something new, and who doesn’t love picking up a new skill!

Not to mention, there are a plethora of YouTube channels that are great for learning about gardening and plants, regardless of your skill level that make the process so much easier.

It’s SO Easy!

Planting a garden does not require a great level of skill. Like we mentioned, if you genuinely put in the work beforehand and understand the process and what your plant requires, you really don’t have to do anything but wait for your plant to grow. If you don’t have the time, space, or desire to go through the process of germinating seeds and raising a plant from beginning to end, having your own garden can be as easy as buying an already grown plant and repotting/replanting it to brighten up your space!

Natural Ambiance

Serious question – Who doesn’t feel better when their living space is adorned with beautiful flowers and greenery? Walking into an apartment and seeing plants growing throughout the house or a bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table instantly brings the space to life. Whatever it is that you’re growing, the greenery and color are sure to make your home garden, whether it is inside or out, a focal point of attention for you and your guests.

And it’s not just the plants, but the planters that they are grown in as well, that contribute to this ambiance. The point is, you can get creative with the plant species, where you put them, and the planters that you put them in! DIY an old pot or cup to fit your personal aesthetic. There are so many ways to brighten up your space that are rarely thought about!

Spice Things Up in the Kitchen

If you have a large enough planter, or a collection of small ones, growing your own herbs is never a bad idea. One of the great things about them is that they don’t require too much space. Even just a windowsill in a sunny spot is sufficient for your herb growing needs.

Not only is a little herb garden the easiest way to get your foot into the door with home gardening, but the benefits of having one are amazing! Especially if you love to cook or are interested in the idea of homemade health remedies. The possibilities for all of the meals and herbal concoctions that you could incorporate some freshly grown herbs into are endless, with the added satisfaction that you put in the work from the ground up (literally!).

Picture of Health

Let’s be honest – in these days of commercialized farming and innovative chemicals, we really never know what’s actually in our food. If you’re buying from the grocery store, chances are that your “fresh” produce contains a multitude of GMOs and preservatives to maintain its shelf life and cosmetic appeal. If you grow a garden with your own produce, you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.

Aside from the physical benefits, having a garden can give you a new hobby and passion – and who doesn’t want that? Raising plants has the potential to bring you some fulfillment and tranquility, so if you’re looking to relax a little, this might be your solution. Which brings us to our next reason to start a garden…

Gardening is Therapeutic

In no way are we suggesting planting a garden should replace professional mental health care, but gardening IS very therapeutic. Whether you’re recovering from an illness, stressed out from a long day of work, or literally just bored, tending to your garden will give you a task to focus on while also helping to foster a mindset that is aimed towards growth and learning.

There are numerous studies that reflect a correlation between spending time with nature and experiencing reduced stress levels. Gardening can provide you with something therapy cannot – a sentimental attachment to nature and greenery with something you nurtured yourself.

Sustainable Decor

There’s no denying that plants make great home decor. You can put them almost anywhere to liven up whatever space needs it. Stop by your local home goods store (ahem, Re-Source York) to pick up some planters that catch your eye and gardening tools to get yourself started. From there the possibilities are infinite. Put a plant on the kitchen windowsill, hang a plant in your bedroom, heck – put one in the bathroom. They are great for the environment, and you can sustainably purchase everything you need to start out if you know the right places (hello, Re-Source York!). 😉
